Littering devastates our Oceans.

Littering is a bad thing to do and we should NEVER let it happen around us. When rubbish gets thrown away it gets sucked into drains and flows down to the ocean where sea plants and animals live. Rubbish and the sea are not friends.

Litter is bad for the ocean because if a sea animal like a turtle eats a plastic lid the turtle might choke and die. I saw a turtle wrapped around with plastic and it couldn’t grow. Its body was deformed. This is very sad.

I saw plastic bottles flowing around at Anchor Bay beach once and I saw people picking up the plastic bottles. My family and I helped the people. There were big bins that we put the rubbish into. This is what all communities should do but if no one littered then others wouldn’t have to pick up our rubbish!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is 1.6 million square kilometres big. It is the largest amount of litter in the world. If we were to clear up the rubbish from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch scientists think it would take 1-2 years of non-stop cleaning.

I hope you have learned to not litter. I am trying my best to not litter and to Recycle, Reuse, Reduce and to Refuse to use ‘one use’ cups and plastic. If we all did this everyday, imagine how clean and healthy our environment would be.

Our Sailing Day

Last Thursday it was a beautiful sunny day to go sailing. Room 7 and Room 6 marched down to Panmure Basin to practise sailing. We walked there for 5 minutes and everyone was tired except for Geo, Kava, Me and Jaeden. Once we were there there was a lady, Steph, who taught us how to sail. Steph had two partners that helped us if we were in trouble.

Room 7 went sailing first and Room 6 was on land. There were activities on land that were fun to learn about. I wanted to go on the boat first but we just had to wait patiently for Room 7 to finish their turn.

We learned about pulleys and knots. The first activity was to put sand in a bag. It was 4 kg we tied a pulley to the bag and tied it to a knot and we had to try and pull it.

After 1 and a half hours it was our turn to go sailing. I was sailing with my friend Kava. We were bad at the start but when we kept trying we got better at sailing. Me and my other friend swapped boats. Steph asked me if I wanted to sail by myself and I said yes. I was afraid the first few minutes because I had to do two jobs at a time.

For a few minutes I was feeling proud of myself because I learnt something new. I was exuberant. I was sailing fast and I almost lost control. My other friends needed some help and I helped them.

They announced the best sailor of the day and they picked me because I was sailing by myself very well.

It was time to go back to school.I was happy when we came back from sailing because I was exhausted. It was an enjoyable experience.

Sailing was fun.I had a very exuberant day.I was sad because i wanted to go back to sailing but i hope we go sailing again.

The stone cottage in Panmure.

Yesterday Room 6 was lucky because we were visiting a stone cottage. I have seen it everyday whenever I come to school but I never knew anything about it. It is just across the road from our school.

I am interested in this doll because it is over 150 years old.It looks like a creepy doll from video games. I also like the cotton of the clothes because it is over 150 years old too and it looks like my baby nieces cottage but much bigger.

I was interested in learning about this mustache cup. It was used by the men in the olden days who liked drinking tea. They put tea in it and when they drank their mouths didn’t get wet.

I was also interested in this clock because it is over 100 years old. It is one of the oldest clocks in the world. I was shocked seeing this because it is my first time seeing one.

These are bellows. It is used to make more fire. You open then close them multiple times until the fire goes. They also used the fire in the fireplace to cook their food.

At the end of the outing, we came back to school and spoke about all the new things we learned. I have never seen so many old things altogether in one place. It is cool.

My cycling experience.

This morning we had two instructors come to school who work for Bigfoot. Their names were Kate and Kyla. They go around schools teaching kids how to ride bikes safely. At first they showed us a bright orange jacket to wear when we are on the road, so cars can see us easily and we don’t get injured. Then they showed us how to put our helmets on properly. They have to be tight so they don’t move around or fall off.

Then they told us to come outside and stand along the fence from smallest to tallest. The smallest grabbed  bikes first. I had one of the school bikes. Then the kids that were good at riding had to go with Kyla and the kids who didn’t know how to ride had to go with Kate. I was with Kyla. We had to go around the top court in a circle. When Kyla said ‘stop’ we had to “stop” and push the brakes softly.

After that we had to do tricks. My brother and I were the only ones who could ride with no hands.

Then it was morning tea and after morning tea we were in groups again. We had to stop on a line and the other team won by 3-1. We also cycled in pairs and we had to look over our shoulders and then put our arms out to show we were turning.

Thank you Bigfoot for teaching me new skills an I want to cycle some more.

Swimming Lessons.

This year we had swimming lessons. The boys were separated from the girls. The boys went first and the girls went at the end of the day. We just waited patiently for the bus to pick us up each day. The first lesson was calling help when you are going to drown in the sea. We had to put one hand up, then swim with our legs kicking and one hand.

In the second lesson we were learning how to float on our backs and our front. We had to hold on a board then float on our back and then we had to move our hands to swim fast while we were floating. The third lesson we were swimming on boards to balance us from swimming and we had to hold on at the top of the board, then kick as fast as we can. Fourth lesson we were learning how to kick with our feet and we had to straighten our feet, then kick as fast as we can. The last part we were diving, jumping, doing a bomb in the pool. I did a bomb and it was big. Then the girls came and we were finished.

Matariki

How to make a Matariki star:

These are the instructions.

First, cut around the outside of your cardboard circle. Cut 1.5cms, equal distance apart all the way around the circle. Slide the wool into the first slit, leaving a tail on the other side. Begin making your way around the shape, passing through each slit several times. Use a second colour of wool and wind around the slits again to make a different pattern.

Matariki is the Maori New Year in New Zealand. We had our first public holiday for Matariki on the 14th July. We were still on holiday. Last week at school we learned about Tawhiririmatea, who was one of Ranginui and Papatuanuku’s sons, and he is also the god of wind. He got angry when his brothers wanted to separate his parents so he pulled out his eyes and threw them up into the Milky Way. Now he blows lots of wind around New Zealand.

Wa using descriptive language to describe characters:

I am a gentle man. I am alone. I hide away from people. I do not want to be spotted by people who are near. I am a lonely man because my wife died. I want to be alone now because I have a son to look after. We love the quiet life.

Our Ki O Rahi tournament.

Yesterday we had a ki o rahi  tournament. First we had to change into our colors of PE clothes. Then we had to get into our houses and I am in TOTARA. It is yellow. We were versing all of the colors. Rata is red, Kauri is green and Rimu is blue. I was playing the 2nd or 3rd game. We were playing against Rimu. At the start of the game I snatched the tags off the players. I dived and took the tags off  lots of them. I was muddy when I ran to the circle and threw the ball at the tupu. I scored and I was proud of myself. The couch said it was half time.

In the 2nd half we were running with the ball and I ran with it. Then one of the people from the Rimu team ripped off my tag. We had 5 seconds to throw the ball to a teammate. I was so happy because they kept throwing the ball to me but then they kept taking my tag off. I was upset with that but I was still very happy. A big boy named Jacob kept scoring and he made our team win and I was still happy. Then we had to go to the canopy when it was finished. We had to thank the couch for teaching us Ki O Rahi and we were so happy they were here reffing for us.
